The Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Coordinating Body for Gender Equality, Zorana Mihajlović, stated that 22 women have been killed in Serbia since the beginning of the year as a result of family and partner violence, and that the entire society should take responsibility for the fight against gender-based violence.
"I believe that no one can remain immune to the news of murder, lost life and the fact that women suffer violence almost every day. Do we want to live in a society where it is normal to kill a woman or to build a community free from violence and discrimination. This is where the responsibility of each individual lies," Mihajlović stated in a written statement.
She also wrote that everyone should be involved in the fight against violence against women and girls: competent institutions, international and civil society organizations, the church, the media and every citizen of Serbia.
The Coordinating Body for Gender Equality advocates for the introduction of a single registry of abusers, and the Government will insist on the creation of that registry as soon as possible in the new mandate.
Recalling that on Monday, another young woman was brutally killed by her husband, Mihajlovic said that she believes that the fight against violence will be more effective when we understand that violence in family and partner relationships is not a private matter that happens in someone's four walls, but "a huge scourge which affects the whole society".
And further: "The state has passed the necessary laws and strategies, competent institutions implement binding protocols, but that is not enough, because we need the education of citizens so that they become aware of what all violence is, that there is no shame in seeking help, that it is everyone's responsibility us to report if we know that violence is happening somewhere, not to protect but to punish all those who think they have the right to hit, insult, humiliate or, unfortunately, kill a woman".
