Former Minister Goran Vesić, who in early August remand for up to 30 days, is still undergoing hospital treatment, while Tomislav Momirović is in the detention unit of the District Prison in Belgrade, announced the Administration for Criminal Sanctions of the Ministry of Justice.
Answering questions from the Beta agency, the Administration stated that Vesić was hospitalized in a private hospital, while Momirović has been in the District Prison since the first day of his arrest.
"The detained person was ordered to custody on August 3, when the commanders of the District Prison in Belgrade took over the security of this person. Given that the person is hospitalized in a civilian hospital, he will be under the supervision of the Security Service all the time. The commanders will be present 24 hours a day, which is part of the regular legal procedure when a person is being treated in a health facility. Only those persons allowed by the court will be able to visit the detainee, which means only those persons who have been given the necessary authorization by the competent court visit", stated the Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions.
Announcements about Vesić leaving the country
This announcement by the Directorate for Criminal Sanctions of the Ministry of Justice came after the announcement on social networks that Minister Goran Vesić left the country by plane a few days ago, and that this was made possible by the first man of the BIA, Vladimir Orlić.
However, these speculations were first denied by lawyer Nemanja Aleksić, the former minister's legal representative, who pointed out in a press release that Vesić has not left Serbia since November 1, 2024, that he has handed over both his diplomatic and private passport to the competent authorities, and that he does not own real estate outside the country.
After the lawyer Aleksić, there was also a statement from the Administration for Criminal Sanctions of the Ministry of Justice.
What is Vesić charged with?
Let us remind you that on the order of the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime (TOK) on August 1, 12 people were arrested, who are suspected of having damaged the budget of Serbia for more than 115 million US dollars on the modernization project of the Novi Sad-Kelebija railway line.
Part of that project was the reconstruction of the Railway Station in Novi Sad, where on November 1, 2024, 16 people died when the reconstructed concrete canopy collapsed, while one person was seriously injured.
In this case, the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime also suspects former ministers Goran Vesić and Tomislav Momirović, who were remanded in custody for up to 30 days.
The night before the arrest warrant was issued, Vesić suddenly fell ill and was taken to the hospital.
Among those arrested are Vesić's associate in the Ministry of Construction, Anita Dimoski, as well as the former director of "Serbian Railway Infrastructure" Nebojša Šurlan.
Slobodanka Katanić, the former investment manager at "Infrastruktur Zeleznica", was also arrested, as well as responsible persons in several companies involved in the railway reconstruction project.
Siniša Jokić, who was the director of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of the City of Novi Sad from January to July 2023, and Veljko Novaković, the public procurement officer of this institute, were also arrested.
