A massive power outage affected a large part of Spain and Portugal, and parts of France and Belgium are also without power - confirmed the Spanish power grid operator. The cause is still unknown.
Due to a massive power outage, flights were suspended, hundreds of elevator failures were reported, subways were evacuated, and many hospitals are operating with the help of backup power sources.
Portuguese grid operator REN claims that the power outages are the result of a "fault in the Spanish power grid" and are linked to a "rare atmospheric phenomenon", but did not say exactly what they were referring to.
Spain has not yet responded to these claims.

The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, said that there are no indications that the interruption of electricity supply in the Iberian Peninsula was caused by a cyber attack.
"I contacted the Prime Ministers of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and Portugal, Luis Montenegro, and inquired about the interruption of electricity supplies in the Iberian Peninsula. The electricity network operators in both countries are working to find the cause and to restore the electricity supply. There are currently no indications of any cyber attack," Costa's post on the X social network said.
