In Serbia, the National No Tobacco Day is celebrated today under the slogan "Every cigarette is harmful". The most frequently used tobacco products are cigarettes, which are smoked daily by 27,1 percent of the population over the age of 15. Twenty or more cigarettes a day are smoked by 15,8 citizens of Serbia. Many smokers, even if they want to, cannot get rid of their addiction to bluish smoke, which for them is a pleasure bordering on a vice.

On this day in 1492, Christopher Columbus recorded the first surviving note about tobacco in his diary. It is known that at least three of Columbus's sailors came home as smokers, and 1516 is usually cited as the year of the introduction of tobacco to the Old World, when the Frenchman Jean Nico (hence: nicotine) imported the first quantities.
