A bizarre incident took place in Germany when the man himself found his stolen car, but then had to deal with the police.
In Mannheim, Germany, the police detained a 27-year-old man for stealing a car. And that thing wouldn't have ended up in the local paper if it weren't for the incredible bizarreness.
The man actually "stole" his car.
Namely, at the end of April, he was in Romania visiting relatives when his car was stolen, which he reported to the Romanian police and insurance. A few weeks later, with the help of GPS, he saw that his car was in Dortmund.
He went there, took a spare key and nicely drove his BMW worth some 12.000 euros back to Mannheim.
He was also detained last Thursday. Because now the theft has been reported by a 38-year-old man from Dortmund who apparently bought the car from a thief, without suspecting that it was stolen.
Impossible to steal something that belongs to you
The police have detained the car for now until they clear up the matter.
But as lawyer Arnt Kempgens explains on TikTok, it is legally impossible to steal something that belongs to you.
"If something is stolen from you, it is yours forever," he says.
The man from Mannheim had every right to get into his car and drive away, the lawyer explains. The only thing that would be forbidden is to use violence in "taking" what belongs to you.
The matter will probably end to the detriment of the man from Dortmund who paid for the stolen vehicle. It is up to him to hope that the real thieves are found.
As reported by the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper, there is no sign or voice of those thieves.
