Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that he was stepping down from public duties because he had to "stop and think" about whether he would continue to head the government after a court in Madrid opened a preliminary investigation against his wife for corruption and influence peddling, he announced BBC.
"I urgently need an answer to the question of whether it is worth it (…) whether I should continue to lead the government or give up that honor," he wrote on the X social network.
The union Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) reported his wife, Begona Gomez, that she helped entrepreneurs with tenders and took advantage of them. The court announced earlier today that it had opened an investigation, without giving details.
Ministers from Sánchez's left-wing government deemed it a false report because the union that filed it was allegedly close to the far right.
