The actor, director and producer Ljubiša Samardžić, who was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, died on September 8, 2017, after undergoing surgery for a brain tumor in the Clinical Center of Serbia in December 2016, he remained immobile and was released for home treatment.
Ljubiša Samardžić Smoki was born in Skopje in 1936 in a family of miners who worked in the Jelašnica coal mine near Niška Banja. Even in high school, he occasionally worked to support his family. He studied law, and then transferred to the Academy of Theater, Film, Radio and Television in Belgrade.
Bojan Stupica got him a scholarship from Atelier 212, but — attracted by the film (his debut in the Scaffold Games, 1961, S. Weiganda) — he played on stage only at the very beginning of his career. He attracted the attention of critics with his next role as a charming misfit in "Prekobrojna" (1962) by Branko Bauer, and his reputation was strengthened in 1963 with the films "Sand Castle" by Boštjan Hladnik, "Days" by Aleksandar Petrović and "Landing on the Tree" by Fadil Hadžić.
He was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice festival for his role in Purisa Đorđević's film "Morning", in which he portrayed the character of a young partisan faced with the tragedies of war, who in the first days of peace through various conflicts - dealing with former enemy collaborators and liquidating traitors - and makes peace with killing ... He received the Grand Prix in Niš for his role in Veljko Bulajić's film "Battle on the Neretva" in 1969.
He played in more than seventy films of different genres, by almost all Yugoslav directors: "The Love Life of Budimir Trajković", "The Death of Mr. Goluza", "Life is Beautiful", "The House by the Railway" and others...
He played the main roles in four television series: "Where are the wild pigs going", "Dimitrije Tucović", "Hot wind" and "Policeman from Petlovo brdo").
