An intensive search is underway for the escaped prisoner, confirmed the deputy commander of the North Region, Veton Elšani. Kosovo Police patrols are currently deployed in the North, checking vehicles in search of a fugitive.
Elšani told the citizens that there is no room for panic.
"Citizens should not be alarmed, control is being carried out in the North. We know who that person is, we have a picture of him and that is why we are looking for him. That is why patrols have been increased and there is no room for panic," said Elishani.
Responsible officials punished
Today, the Kosovo Correctional Service suspended four of its employees, namely the director of the institution, one senior supervisor and two correctional officers, due to the escape of a prisoner convicted of murder from the detention center in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica, the institution announced.
According to the Department of Corrections, he was categorized as an advanced status inmate and was among inmates eligible for parole.
At the time of his escape, he was in the institution's workshop, where he was engaged in work.
"Immediately after ascertaining his absence, all internal operational procedures were activated and the competent security institutions were informed," the statement said.
The Kosovo Correctional Service pointed out that it had started an internal investigation to determine the circumstances of the case and announced that it would take "all necessary measures" in accordance with current legislation.
