She passed away after a long and serious illness, and she worked, until the last day, on the editing of "Novi Magazin" and proved again and again her fighting spirit, her love for journalism and her desire for life.
Nadežda was born in Inđija and grew up in Mostar, Makarska and Split, in the family of partisan war commander, national hero Ivan Gaća. She considered Belgrade her city, where she completed her English language and literature studies at the Faculty of Philology, although she was also educated at the Faculty of Philosophy of Zagreb University.
She started working professionally as a journalist in 1974, at Radio-television Belgrade, and ended her working days on state television at the end of 1987, after the victory of Slobodan Milošević at the Eighth Session of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Serbia. Then, as unsuitable for the new set of authorities, she was first suspended from the position of editor-commentator, and then she resigned. In 1990, she continued her journalistic career in Jutel and Ljubljana's "Delo", then "Borba", "Naša borba" and "Danas". 14 years ago, she founded the weekly "Novi magazin" and the portal of the same name. Until last week, she led the editorial office and left behind 752 issues of the weekly.
In addition to her journalistic work, Nadezhda was a co-author, editor and author of several publicist books. And as a tireless fighter for human rights, she was among the founders of several reputable non-governmental organizations and, of course, among the founders of the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia.
As they remind from Nuns, she was dedicated to the association for over two decades, and she led it for four years. During her two two-year mandates (2006–2010), the Code of Journalists of Serbia was adopted, and the Press Council was established based on it - both as a result of agreements with other associations. During Nadezhda's time in Nuns, CINS - the Center for Investigative Journalism of Serbia, a well-known and award-winning newsroom that has given birth to numerous recognized journalists, was founded, and the Nuns Solidarity Fund was founded to help and support vulnerable colleagues.
"She was a born leader, she brought people together, removed obstacles and found solutions. And she knew how to protect and provide for those she led", I pointed out at Nadezhda's commemoration. Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, described Nadežda as one of the most significant women in Yugoslav and Serbian journalism, but also as a persistent, persevering and stubborn fighter for the rights of marginalized groups.
Historian Dubravka Stojanović suggested that Nadežda Gaća's name become a metaphor for anyone who is strong, gentle and steadfast at the same time - "You are just Nadežda".
