Goranka Matić, an art historian who devoted her life to photography, has died, leaving a striking image of a troubled, turbulent era and its heroes. As a photo editor, author and good spirit of the newsroom in difficult times, she made an immeasurable contribution to the weekly "Vreme", which forever remains her grateful debtor.

From 1990 to 2006, Goranka was the photo editor of the weekly "Vreme", giving it a visual identity with an almost heroic feat. At the moment when, before the conclusion of the first January printed issue, we were hit by the news of her death, we must remember how at the beginning of the preparation of the first issue there were only a few photos available on the news desk, and how she, with her reputation and creative energy, made it possible to photo to be a striking part of the visual identity of our newspaper and to remain an impressive testimony of the culture of street protests of the nineties and the spirit of that time.
From 2006 to 2010, Goranka worked as a photo editor at "Politica", and from 2010 to 2015 at Radio-Television of Serbia. She taught photojournalism at the Faculty of Political Sciences and was an assistant professor at the Faculty of Media and Communications, in the subjects of photojournalism and documentary photography.
Her retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 2020 spoke impressively about the oeuvre of Goranka Matić. She published several books, among which stand out Days of pain and pride i Ten years against.
Goranka is the winner of many awards, including the October Salon award (1989), the "Conquest of Freedom" award (2002), Politikina's award (2004), the Annual ULUPUDS award (2005), the UNS Lifetime Achievement Award, the "Tanja Petrović" Foundation award (2021).
The news of the death reached the "Vremena" editorial office just before the end of the printed issue, and the editorial office sadly promises to publish a worthy tribute to our Goranka Matić in the next printed edition. Unfortunately, due to the force of circumstances and the newspaper's note, in this place, with only a few biographical data, we remind you of that dear person with a bright spirit and prolific author.
