The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has chosen a confrontational course, and we will see what kind of price we will pay for that, foreign policy analyst Boško Jakšić told Vreme. Political scientist Cvijetin Milivojević adds that the government used the vote on the resolution on Srebrenica for the election campaign, for which he believes that the opposition is indirectly to blame.
After the vote, Serbian officials declared "victory for Vučić", because the adoption of the resolution was supported by a minority of 43 percent of the member states of the United Nations.
All accompanied by an enormous amount of pathos
Foreign policy analyst Boško Jakšić tells "Vreme" that the reactions of the Serbian authorities after the resolution was passed are not surprising.
"There was such a campaign, during which Serbia was in a state of emergency, where only Srebrenica was talked about, and apparently the elections were relegated to the background." "During that state of emergency, Vučić hinted that he could not prevent the resolution from being voted on and emphasized it on the numbers game of abstentions, so that he would then actually declare Serbia and himself the moral winner of the entire procedure and voting in the UN," Jakšić points out and adds that there is no basis for this. .
"First of all, it's ignoring the facts." That is why there are three types of votes: for, against and abstentions. You cannot interpret abstentions as votes against. But that is the only way to somehow declare this Pyrrhic victory," says the analyst.
Jakšić also commented on the behavior of the President of Serbia in New York.
"It's all accompanied with an enormous amount of pathos." Therefore, this wrapping in the flag and before that the dramatic hooting at the flag is completely beyond any dignity, regardless of whether you win or lose".
A reminder of the time of Milosevic
The interlocutor of "Vremena" believes that the entire process could leave more lasting consequences, first of all for the region, and then beyond.
"Vučić has put Serbia in a position where, like in the time of Milošević, it admires a certain Nauru, and quarrels with Germany, which is the main economic partner.
After the resolution was passed, a convoy of vehicles decorated with Serbian flags passed through the center of Belgrade.
"This is happening." before the announced assembly. The amount of pernicious Serbian patriotism that was brought into public life on the occasion of the resolution on Srebrenica is irresistibly reminiscent of the times before the wars and conflicts during the Milošević era. I do not believe that there will be wars now because there is no readiness on the other side, but relations are broken. "Relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina have been damaged, but relations with Montenegro have also been seriously damaged, completely unnecessarily," emphasizes Jakšić.
As he says, Montenegro extended a hand to Serbia and made a good gesture by submitting the amendment in order to clear up doubts about collective and individual responsibility. "And then you attack Podgorica for being traitors and stabbing you in the back." "Vučić chose a confrontational course and we will see what price we will pay for that," concludes Jakšić.
The campaign for the local elections was marked by geopolitical issues
Political scientist Cvijetin Milivojević tells "Vreme" that the government used the process related to the vote on the resolution on Srebrenica for the election campaign, and that this could have been expected.
"Everything has been arranged in Vučić. And that the entire campaign for local elections will be covered with geopolitical, national and state issues. Is it a coincidence, or was his assessment that the election should be called at this very moment because he expected what would happen. "Whatever the case, if you add to that the permanent campaign that is being conducted in connection with Kosovo's candidacy for the Council of Europe, it certainly works in the hands of the ruling coalition," says Milivojević.
He believes that the indirect culprit for imposing such topics is the opposition, which he says has "swallowed the bait again", and that in the upcoming local elections we will have a referendum campaign - they will declare themselves "for" and "against" Vučić. "And the one who organizes the referendum always wins," the political scientist points out.
"The opposition accepts that, instead of demanding that once and for all local elections be separated from presidential, parliamentary elections or referendums." This is nothing unusual, it is a positive value that comes to us from all EU countries and neighboring countries. If the elections are only local, then such topics that Vučić is pushing cannot cover up the local elections", Milivojević explains and adds that it is logical that if Vučić is allowed to be the holder of the list and that the lists in all cities and towns are named after him municipalities, he will deal with the local with his theme and official campaign from the position of the president of all citizens of Serbia.
The opposition also pokes its finger in the eye of its voters
Milivojević points out that the column on the streets of Belgrade decorated with Serbian flags was a message from the authorities intended for the electorate.
"But unfortunately for the opposition and its electorate." People who vote for the opposition at the bar do not have to be against Vučić's way of conducting foreign policy. An angry voter of the opposition at the booth has the right to say - yes, but I do not agree with the voting of this resolution. The opposition must understand that," the analyst points out, and adds that the passing of the resolution did not end with a "victory" for either side, but that, in the best case, it is about the status quo.
"It won't do anyone any good." I see that part of the opposition immediately started jokingly commenting on the events of yesterday. By being in some way spiteful with Vučić and talking about how he misuses the Serbian flag, they are indirectly poking a finger in the eye of their voters who believe that it is the duty of the President of Serbia or the Minister of Foreign Affairs to fight against some kind of statement, declaration or resolution that in some way it can bring harm to Serbia", says Milivojević and emphasizes that the opposition parties must behave smarter.
"The opposition must be much more sensitive and understand that it cannot criticize everyone and everything in the same way," concludes Milivojević.
