Montenegro should finish negotiations with European Union next year, Albania in 2027. Serbia, and Serbia has been stuck in the accession negotiations for years, exposed to increasingly harsh criticism from Brussels.
Ignoring that, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić says before leaving for Brussels that he will propose to Ursula von der Leyen that the whole West Balkan enter the EU together.
"The entry of the Western Balkans as a whole into the EU is the best idea. If someone is left out, what will you do with those countries? And I know that everyone is talking about alignment, but this is not only about the future of the region, but about the future of Europe. If we are all accepted together, without exception, everyone will feel better, both Albanians and Bosnians... I hear only good reactions to this idea and I will say that to Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen," said Vučić.
He did not say whose reactions are good to an idea that completely ignores the reality in which Serbia finds itself both internally and externally, as well as its position and bilateral relations in the region.
On Wednesday in Brussels, the President of Serbia will talk with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. During her visit to Belgrade in mid-October, von der Leyen told Vučić that there was enough empty talk and that she expected him to move from words to actions.
We encourage you to hurry up.
In the opinion of the Prime Minister of Montenegro, no one will wait for anyone. Milojko Spajic commented on Vučić's proposal on social networks:
"I agree that the EU should be the final decision for the entire Western Balkans."
However, we will be waiting for you there as early as 2028 and we are rooting for you to really hurry up and speed up the other candidates from the environment."
For years, it has been debated whether to enter the EU together or separately and the advantages of both models.
Earlier, this opinion of Vučuč was expressed by the Minister for European Integration, Nemanja Starović.
"It would be best if the entire Western Balkans joined the EU as a package," he said in October at the Summit of the Brdo-Brioni initiative in Durrës, where Albania gathered the leaders of the Western Balkans.
