The constituent session of the Belgrade City Assembly is scheduled for today, and it is still uncertain how it will proceed - whether an agreement will be reached on the formation of the city government or whether new elections will be held.
The President of the Provisional Authority of the City of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić, said on Thursday that the constituent session of the City Assembly is scheduled for 10 a.m., but he did not want to confirm whether the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), of which he is a member, has a majority or not.
Šapić told journalists, during a tour of the works on Nikola Pašić Square, that he would provide all the details immediately before the session.
"On Friday, you will receive all the information that I can give you until then," he said.
Asked if he is among those members of the SNS who are putting pressure on the president of that party, Miloš Vučević, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, to ensure that the majority is formed, Šapić stated that he is not, and that everything will be completed by March 3, when the legal deadline for the constitution of the City Assembly expires.
The position of the pro-European opposition is the same
Dobrica Veselinović from the Green-Left Front tells "Vreme" that the position of the pro-European opposition remains the same.
"We believe that this city assembly should not be constituted because it does not represent the will of the citizens." It is clear to the citizens, based on the decisions of the European Parliament and the OIDHR report, that the elections were not fair and honest and that the results do not represent the true picture of what people voted for," says Veselinović.
He adds that the Green-Left Front and the Serbia Against Violence coalition will do everything to prevent the assembly from being constituted.
"We stand by the demands to fix and publish the voter list, to correct numerous irregularities in it, to improve the situation in the media with a focus on REM, to assign a fifth frequency and to influence the suspension of official campaigning and pressure on voters". says Veselinović for "Vreme" and adds that a joint agreement on the date of the new Belgrade elections is very important.
"If the SNS has a majority, we will prevent the session because it is a violation of the electoral will of the citizens," Veselinović told TV Nova S earlier. "It will be democratic resistance and we will show the citizens what it looks like." We have a spectrum of tools, capabilities and performance that we will use tomorrow. Believe that tomorrow 50 of us will clearly send a message through our actions that we do not allow this. We will respect the institution we are in, but believe me, we have a plan. And we will succeed in our intention".
