One year since the biggest gathering on the streets of Belgrade
It will soon be one year since the big protest that took place on March 15, 2025 in Belgrade, when hundreds of thousands of students and citizens gathered in the city center at the call of the Students in Blockade movement. The rally was part of several months of demonstrations organized by university students across Serbia, demanding political accountability of the authorities and changes in society.
The gathering started at several locations in the city, from where columns of students headed towards the central protest area. Participants carried banners and shouted slogans against the government of President Aleksandar Vučić, while during the protest, speeches were given by students and representatives of civil initiatives calling for institutional changes and calling for elections.
During the protest, there was an incident that caused a lot of public attention, after the participants reported the use of a device known as a "sound cannon". Part of the protesters claimed that a powerful sound blast caused panic and short-term confusion in the crowd, while the competent authorities denied that such a device was used. This event triggered numerous public controversies and demands for an independent investigation.
The March 15 protest is considered one of the largest student gatherings in Serbia in recent years and represented an important moment in the development of the student movement, which then continued with protests, blockades of faculties and political initiatives across the country. The organizers then said that the gathering showed broad support from citizens and that the student movement will continue the fight for political and social changes.
