Tonight, the National Theater celebrates the centenary of the first performance of the ballet "Krcko Oraščić" on its stage, and thus in Serbia.
"The Nutcracker by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is one of the most beloved classics of all time, and it is based on the story, a fairy-tale Christmas adventure, by ETA Hoffmann "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King".
One hundred years ago, only fragments of this great ballet were shown, combined into one act, choreographed by Jelena Poljakova, the head of the newly formed Ballet in Belgrade at the time, who herself played the main role.
The entire ballet, meaning two acts in six pictures, was performed at the National Theater for the first time only in 1937, almost fifteen years later, under the name "Rskalo", choreographed by Margarita Froman.
This evening's latest production of "Krcka Oraščić" premiered in 2014 under the direction and choreography of Konstantin Kostyukov. To date, it has been seen by 43.000 viewers. The Ballet directorate says that tickets are sold out as soon as the monthly repertoire appears.
Tonight's soloists are Jose Iglesias in the role of Krcko. Margarita Cheromukhina in the role of Masha, and Dejan Kolarov in the role of Mr. Drosselmeyer. The conductor is Đorđe Pavlović.
The performance of "Krcko Orašići" is the first performance of a ballet in one act in our country, which represented a unique whole. That is why tonight's performance is an introduction to the celebration of the jubilee - one hundred years of the Ballet of the National Theater in Belgrade, whose central ceremony will be held on March 19. The beginning of ballet on the Serbian stage is related to March, when in 1923 the first full-length ballets "Scheherazade" and "Sylphide" were performed. It is said that Belgrade discovered the pointe shoes then.
