According to what is being heard from government representatives these days, people would say: "Who will see the year 2027 and that EXPO", but they seem to be deliberately omitting to say something. Belgrade will not host the real big EXPO, but something smaller, more precisely the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO 2027.
But who cares about those small details when the plans are so big. And according to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, these big plans are "difficult" for a total of 12 billion euros. Everything should be completed by the end of 2026, just before the International Specialized Exhibition EXPO 2027.
The prime minister also said that the goal is that during the EXPO in Belgrade, all vehicles within the event will be electric without drivers, and for Finance Minister Siniša Malog, the world exhibition EXPO 2027 is the most important and biggest event for Serbia in the past few decades.
The Zajedno party announced that EXPO, which will be held in Belgrade in 2027, is not a world exhibition, but, as they say, a sideshow of the same franchise, which was also canceled this year.
Misleading
From Zajedno, they state that the authorities deliberately do not say that this is not the World Exhibition EXPO precisely in order to mislead citizens.
"Belgrade got this, secondary, specialized EXPO - for which Belgrade proposed the theme: "Games for humanity, sports and music for all". It is interesting to say that this specialized EXPO 2023- has been cancelled. It was supposed to be held in Argentina, however, due to the corona virus and the excessive price, which the organizers realized would not benefit the local community - they gave up," the party announced.
The famous world exhibition EXPO, whose history dates back to the middle of the 19th century, is held every five years and in 2025 will be held in the city of Osaka, Japan, and together they point out that the construction cost of the entire EXPO 2025 project is 840 million dollars.
"We want to create a miracle," says Minister Mali. According to his words, the construction of the EXPO center will be financed partly by means of the state and partly by loans.
On 127 hectares of land, a new national stadium, a new Belgrade Fair, 1.500 apartments and space for EXPO will be built.
Twelve billion euros
The Vice-President of the Center Party of Serbia, Slobodan Cvejić, commenting on the announcement of the investment of 12 billion euros in the EXPO 2027 event, said that great economic inequalities, biased regional development policy, concentration of wealth in a small number of hands - this is the model of development of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister Ana Brnabić
For foreign investment consultant Milan Kovačević, the goal of everything is Vučić's desire to fascinate naive citizens.
"Vučić is trying to fascinate naive citizens with that figure, and it is such a large investment that it can only be secured by further heavy borrowing, and our debt is already dangerously high," Kovačević told Beta.
As Kovačević previously told the portal ""Times", in order to enter into such an enterprise, a good analysis should first be made. Also, it should be known later if it is a big failure who is the main culprit.
"In our country, the government tries to present reality as more beautiful than it is, especially the future. Less is said about what happened in the past, because in the past there were both successes and failures. So this seems like an attempt to get people upbeat and it might be useful for some upcoming elections. With this, it can also happen that the organization is abandoned, as has already happened in the past with some countries", Kovačević believes.
As Vučić stated, December 1, 2026 is the deadline for all EXPO facilities to be completed, because then Serbia must give the keys to the participants of that international exhibition, who should move into the premises.
