During the 1990s, the term "grooming" was increasingly used instead of the word "seduction", referring to "gaining (a victim's) trust in order to sexually assault them".
The perpetrators of this act, targeting above all minors, they will first try to gain the trust of the child or parents by making friends with them, for easier access to the child.
Establishing a trusting relationship with the family means that the child's parents are less likely to believe that something fatal is really happening.
People who want to commit such an act can offer themselves to babysit children, in order to spend as much time as possible alone with them.
Another way to gain the child's trust is to give gifts or money in exchange for sexual contact.
As part of the act of grooming, the perpetrators of this act usually also show pornography or discuss sexual topics with the child, in the hope that this will make it easier for them to accept such an act, that they will "normalize" it.
Physical contact is common, even when the child does not want it.
Online grooming
Anyone can be a groomer – regardless of age, gender or race.
The period of this act can last for years.
Children are bullied by both strangers and people they know, such as teachers, sports coaches and similar "mentors".
Groomers can use the same sites, games and apps as youngsters, spending time learning about the child's interests, with the goal of building a relationship with them.
Grooming tactics and methods
Victims can experience this form of abuse on social networks, through text messages, on messaging apps, through email or in-game chats.
Tactics used by groomers include pretending to be younger, giving advice and showing understanding, buying gifts, giving attention and taking them on trips and outings.
Groomers may try to isolate children from friends and family, making them reliant and dependent on them.
This act often goes under the radar because the victims may not even understand what is happening to them.
The signs of this act are often not visible - teenagers can behave as expected of them at that age, which hides the act of grooming.
How grooming works in practice - the case of P. Didi
Although the victims are mostly minors who are targeted by pedophiles, it is not a rare case where this kind of abuse is also applied to the elderly.
The steps that follow when committing such an act are identical to those used by pedophiles - establishing an intense relationship, confessing personal "wounds" and seeking salvation, gradually shifting boundaries, isolating oneself from close people and establishing economic or emotional dependence.
