"We inform the public that slanders, incitements, insults and threats addressed to the rector Vladan Đokić and deans of higher education institutions represent an attack on University of Belgrade (UB) and the scientific community as a whole", the members of the UB Council stated in the press release.
The UB Council points out that "reckless, baseless, arbitrary and aggressive statements in the media, which are becoming more frequent, are undermining the foundations of one of the most important pillars of Serbian society".
According to them, the fact that high-ranking representatives of the executive power, whose rhetoric is aimed at harming UB, is taking the lead in this is worrying.
"The current decisions of the University of Belgrade are not a reflection of the rector's personal will, but the general will of the academic community to support the justified demands of students and their non-violent advocacy for their fulfillment. Deeply convinced that the fulfillment of student demands would bring benefits to the state and society, the members of the academic community accepted these demands as their own," the members of the Council say.
The members of the UB Council call on the public of Serbia to react urgently and strongly condemn the allegations and actions of public office holders, which cause incalculable damage to the reputation and values of the University and society.
And the Rector's College of the University of Kragujevac on Monday (March 31) "strongly condemned" the brutal attack on the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Niš, Natalija Jovanović.
The announcement states that the Rector's College condemns both the spread of hate speech and the targeting of individual members of the academic community, which, as indicated, "creates the preconditions and atmosphere for the occurrence of such incidents."
"We appeal to the institutions to urgently take appropriate measures in order to preserve the general safety and security of both members of the academic community and all citizens of Serbia," they said.
Rector Đokić has recently been a regular "customer" of the regime's tabloids.
Minister Darko Glišić recently demanded that Đokić be arrested immediately. U bizarre performance, Glišić accused Đokić of making tens of thousands of students who want to study unhappy and that he planned to overthrow the state and become prime minister.
