Pred protest which will be held on Saturday (March 15) in Belgrade, Executive Board Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (IO SANU) announced that it strongly supports the student union protests.
"The Executive Board reminds us of the positions expressed by several departments and boards of SANU, including the Executive Board itself, that students, like all other people in our country, have a natural and legitimate right to fight for their future, for better functioning of the state and institutions and a fairer society," states the statement of IO SANU.
As it is added, the Executive Board strongly supports the students' effort that "their struggle, including protests and other forms of expression of dissatisfaction and demands, takes place peacefully and in accordance with academic dignity and civilizational norms that they thus promote."
"The executive board appeals to all actors on the political and public scene to fully respect and preserve the spirit of the student protest in the upcoming events," the announcement states.
On the occasion of Saturday's protest, the Academic Committee for Higher Education SANU also spoke out, announcing that it "asks all actors to stop the distortion of facts, heated and
threatening rhetoric and to enable students to peacefully and dignified
express their demands for positive changes in society".
The Department of Social Sciences of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) also announced that it supports student protests and condemns threats and physical attacks on students.
The statement stated that the Department, at the meeting held on March 11, supported the position of the Committee for the Study of National Minorities and Human Rights of SANU, which in its actions and activities so far tried to respond to changes in the time of intense social and political events.
The department and the Board joined the statement of the Academic Board of Higher Education SANU, in which it supports the student protests and condemns threats and physical attacks against students, the statement said.
The students who have been in the blockade for more than four months are organizing the biggest gathering so far in Belgrade on Saturday, March 15, as announced.
