The Republic Institute of Statistics announced the inflation rate in October, the same data that the Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali stated a few days ago.
Consumer prices in October of this year, compared to the same month of the previous year, increased by 8,5 percent, while compared to December 2022, they increased on average by seven percent, the Republic Institute of Statistics announced.
Before the data on inflation in Serbia were published on the website of the Republic Institute of Statistics, Minister of Finance Siniša Mali presented them publicly as a result of the work of the ruling party.
What has become more expensive?
As stated, the prices of personal consumption products and services in October compared to September recorded an average growth of 0,3 percent.
In October, compared to the previous month, price growth was recorded in the groups "education" (2,9 percent), "clothing and footwear" (1,7), "health" (0,8), in the groups "alcoholic beverages and tobacco", "apartment equipment and current maintenance" and "restaurants and hotels" (by 0,5 percent each), "housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels" (0,3) and in the groups "transport" and "recreation and culture" (for po 0,2 percent).
The drop in prices was recorded in the "communications" group (-0,1 percent), while the prices of other products and services did not change significantly, the Institute stated.
It's not normal
The fact that Finance Minister Siniša Mali came out with data on October inflation before the Republic Institute of Statistics caused controversy in the public and the question where did the minister get the data on inflation before RSZ?
Economists claim that our politicians have always been privileged in using public data, but this should not be normal.
That's how the professor at TMF Petar Đukić said that our politicians have always been privileged in using public data.
Professor at the Faculty of Economics in Belgrade, Dejan Šoškić, also pointed out that this is a procedural error and that no state authority should publish a flash assessment of the RZS.
"There are procedures and deadlines and that should be respected." The information becomes official only when it is published by the Statistical Office, and until then it is not final. In addition, RZS calculates inflation, and the National Bank of Serbia is tasked with conducting policies that affect inflation. "The Minister of Finance has no reason to advertise there," said Šoškić.
