At least 40 people were killed and 740 were wounded in rocket attacks by Hamas on southern Israel, according to Israeli media. Palestinian officials state that 161 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes, and nearly 1.000 people were injured.
There are no citizens of Serbia among the victims.
Hamas leaders say that this is the day of the greatest struggle and the last day of the occupation, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the country is at war.
"Our first goal is to drive out the enemy forces that have infiltrated and restore security and peace to the communities that have been attacked," Netanyahu said.
He also stated that one of the goals is to secure other fronts so that no one joins the war.
"We are at war. In war you need to be clear minded. I call on the citizens of Israel to unite in order to achieve our highest goal - victory in the war," said Benjamin Netanyahu.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinian people have the right to defend themselves against the "terror of settlers and occupation troops," the Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.
Abbas was speaking at an emergency meeting with top Palestinian government officials.
No Serbs were killed or injured
The honorary consul of Serbia in Israel, Aleksandar Nikolić, said that no Serbs were killed or injured in today's rocket attacks by Hamas on Israel.
"The most important thing for us is that there are no citizens of our country among the victims and victims. We are in constant communication with our residents, but also with students, especially those in the southern district, which is the most affected, as well as our pilgrims and tourists," Nikolić told Tanjug.
He stated that there are currently several groups of pilgrims in Israel, including Bishop Arsenije of Niš and Ilarion of Timoč.
"They are all safe and well, and they are following the instructions of our embassy, which called on them to obey the orders of the Israeli authorities," Nikolic said.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, condemned today's sudden terrorist attacks on Israel, stating that, as he said, today more than ever it is necessary for Israelis and Palestinians to stop violence together.
"We condemn the terrible attacks on Israel." Throughout history, the Jewish people have survived great suffering, and that is why Israel deserves a peaceful and safe life. Today, more than ever before, the world needs Israelis and Palestinians to stand together on the road to violence," Vučić wrote on his Twitter profile.
Immediate cessation of violence
Strong reactions to the attack on Israel came from the EU and numerous prime ministers and presidents of the countries of the old continent.
Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for an "immediate cessation of violence between Israelis and Palestinians," the Saudi state agency reported.
"We are monitoring the unprecedented events between certain Palestinian forces and Israeli occupation forces that have led to high levels of violence on multiple fronts," the statement said.
