Vasić has been in custody for almost two months, as well as students and activists Lazar Dinić, Davor Stefanović, Srđan Đurić, Mladen Cvijetić and Lado Jovović, and they are accused of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order, based on their wiretapped conversation, which was broadcast on regime television.
Deputy president of the Novi Sad board Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) Marija Vasić started a hunger and thirst strike on Tuesday and refuses to receive an infusion.
Her lawyer, Aleksandar Petrović, wrote on his X order that Vasić started a strike at eight o'clock on Tuesday due to illegal detention.
"Her message is 'I am asking for release from illegal detention and I will protest against it with my life, because I am not asking for mercy, nor would I give it to you,'" Petrović wrote.
High Court in Novi Sad on Tuesday, he extended the detention of six defendants for preparing an act against constitutional order and security Of Serbia in complicity.
The press release states that the extra-trial panel of the High Court in Novi Sad, ex officio reviewing the decision on custody against the defendants Mladen Cvijetić, Srđan Đurić, Lazar Dinić, Marija Vasić, Lad Jovović and Davor Stefanović, and after the indictment was submitted on May 13, unanimously passed a decision extending the detention of the named defendants for 30 days, which according to that decision can last until June 12.
"In the indictment proposal, the prosecutor proposed, among other things, that the detention be extended for the defendants who are in custody," the statement specifies.
The non-trial panel of this court found that in relation to all the defendants, there are still grounds for keeping them in custody, the court states.
"Appreciating the seriousness, nature and manner of committing the criminal offense, i.e. that the defendants are reasonably suspected of having conspired and planned to commit the criminal offense for which they are suspected in this proceeding during the protest under the slogan '15 for 15' in Belgrade, and that it is a well-known fact that the protests of students and other citizens have been going on since the beginning of November 2024, continuously, and they are still going on, that is, such protests are held almost every day, the panel found that all the above-mentioned circumstances indicate a well-founded fear that the defendants, if they were released, could repeat the criminal offense in a short period of time".
As it is added, the panel also considered the application of some of the milder measures provided for in the provisions of the CPC, but it is of the opinion that the intensity of the special circumstances is still such that it has not decreased, which is why in this particular case, detention is still the only adequate and expedient measure.
