The political crisis in Serbia was on the agenda of the plenary session of the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 11, said the rapporteur of the European Parliament for Serbia, Tonino Picula.
Picula told the Beta agency that the adoption of the resolution is not foreseen, but only a discussion.
On Tuesday, the EP will deal with Serbia at the request of the parliamentary groups Socialists and Democrats, Obnovimo, Zeleni and the European People's Party (EPP).
As an argument for the debate, Picula stated that the situation in Serbia has been constantly escalating since the collapse of the canopy of the Novi Sad railway station on November 1 last year, when 15 people died.
"Mass regular protests and marches are in progress, emphasizing the demand to determine the responsibility that led to the tragedy." There are constant physical and verbal attacks on protest participants. The situation is still very tense, and the prime minister resigned ten days ago, which led to the collapse of the entire government", it is pointed out.
Picula, who announced his visit to Serbia by the end of February, also reminded that the European Commission expressed concern about reported incidents against protest participants and called for a quick investigation, as well as that the Socialists and Democrats, the parliamentary group to which he belongs, as well as some other parliamentary groups in the EP, came out with their assessment of the situation in Serbia.
Let us recall that at the end of January, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, the second largest group in the EP with 136 MPs, as well as the parliamentary groups of the Greens, which has 53 MPs and Renew Europe with 77 MPs, condemned the violence against the protest participants in Serbia and supported the students and their demands.
The largest grouping in the European Parliament, the European People's Party (EPP), which has 188 deputies, assessed that students and citizens of Serbia have the right to peaceful demonstrations, but that Serbia does not need radicalization, but dialogue and work on European reforms.
