The name of Patrick Dryd may be familiar to fans of martial arts, but in recent days it has become known to the wider public in Serbia. Who is the dean of the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education in Novi Sad?

Former representative of Yugoslavia in judo and sambo Patrick Dryde the dean is Faculty of Sports and Physical Education in Novi Sad.

On Monday, April 28, after being booed and not allowed to enter the university, he returned accompanied by the police, who hit the crowd and used pepper spray.

Condemnations of the incident came from both sides of the political ladder in Serbia. The government defends the dean, criticizes the students and threatens them, while the opposition criticizes the police and the dean for using physical force.

Who is Patrick Dryde?

Before taking up the position of dean of the faculty in March 2024, Patrick Dryd was a full-time professor of martial arts at this faculty.

According to official data, he is the holder of the title of master for the seventh day in judo. He was a representative of Yugoslavia in judo and sambo. He is an international judge of the highest category in judo and sambo.

He is the vice-president of the European Sambo Federation. At the World University Sports Federation (FISU), Drid is the president of the technical commissions for two sports, judo and sambo.

He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Sports Legends and Veterans of Novi Sad and an active participant in all its activities.

As stated in the official biography on the website of the faculty, Drid received his bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate in the field of sports sciences at the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education in Novi Sad.

He teaches at all three levels of study at the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education of the University of Novi Sad, and it is also stated that he is a visiting professor at several foreign universities.

He has a large scientific production behind him, and is the author or co-author of about 200 scientific articles in more than 60 international journals.

How much does he earn and what does he own?

Since 2016, Patrick Dryd has reported his earnings and assets to the Agency for the Prevention of Corruption on several occasions. He became the dean of DIF in 2024, and he submitted the last asset report in 2023, writes 021.

Drid also declared his assets as an official, because he was previously an undersecretary in the provincial secretariat for sports and youth.

When he last declared his assets, his salary at the faculty was slightly higher than 230.000 dinars, and he also received funds as a member of the Board of Directors of the Scientific Institute for Food Technologies.

In the last property map, he stated that he has half of the share in a four-room apartment and a garage, and that he owns a car and a motorcycle.

Drid was also the acting director of the Business School in Novi Sad, which he entered with the assistance of the police, since the former director had previously refused to hand over her duties, according to 021.

Colleague and security guard to Rector Madić

It is interesting that the character of the DIF dean was noticed by the public at the end of March, when he acted as a security guard for fellow rector Dejan Madić, writes N1.

Namely, Novi Sad rector Madić skilfully avoids students and colleagues, even holding a Council session where he should finally be dismissed. However, on March 31, he was seen briefly at his home faculty - the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education.

Although the students reached the office where he locked himself in record time, they failed to ask him any questions because the professors and the dean of that faculty, Patrick Dryd, pretending to be security guards, took him out of the building, Autonomija.info wrote at the time.

Students noticed Madić and alerted his colleagues, who immediately came in larger numbers to the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education and in the corridor in front of the office where Madić was, they asked him to come out in order to ask him questions. The office door was locked, writes N1.

They blew their whistles and shouted for the rector to come out. They were shouting "Come out" and "Whoever doesn't come out is the one who will be killed". Soon, the dean of the Faculty of Sports, Patrick Dryd, accompanied by several professors, came to that office.

They asked the students to quiet down and move away from the office door, which they did. Professors of this faculty stood in front of the students and practically made it impossible for them to pass through the corridor and approach Madić.

Drid asked the students not to blow their whistles anymore, because he has "ear problems, so a health problem" and if they make noise he may pass out. The students listened to him. They said they wanted to talk to the rector.

Madić opened the door for Drid and they left the building together, followed by several professors who acted as security guards for the rector, writes N1.
