The morning after stormy and tense evenings and nights of March 21 in Nis, the park in front of the Officers' Home in Niš is clean and peaceful, but the reactions of the authorities and the opposition are not calming down.
While the representatives of the government condemn the attack on the mayor of Nis and see it as a colored revolution, the nervousness of the "Djilasovs" and their attempt to come to power through violence, the oppositionists point out that the assembly Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) had to be canceled and that Niš progressives were deliberately exposed as "clay pigeons", Juzne Vesti writes.
Eggs for the mayor
After the gathering of progressives in the Officers' Home in Niš was dissolved, because the leaders of the SNS refused to come due to security reasons, and the gathering of citizens at the location next to it was prevented because strong police forces cordoned off this area, the situation on the streets became tense.
Disgruntled citizens threw eggs and chased the progressives, the police expanded and moved the cordons, and a video surfaced showing someone pelting Niš Mayor Dragoslav Pavlović with eggs and pouring water on them.
The first to speak was the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, who said that he was at the "Nais" hotel and announced that he would "come to Nis soon and that he would "run away all the thugs who think they can create order in Serbia the way they want". He was seen and photographed with Pavlović, who appeared calm and unharmed in the pictures.
The announcement was also sent by Pavlovic, who said that Nis was and will remain safe and called on all citizens of Nis for peace and unity.
Then the President of the Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, spoke and said that the violence in Nis was committed by people who support the protests of students in the blockade and opposition parties, and condemnations of the violence came from the Minister of Economy in the technical mandate, Adrijana Mesarović, and other members of the SNS.
For all of them, the culprits are mainly oppositionists, while Vučič stated that the worst evil trio in Niš "consists of Milić, the dean, the wife of Banana Jovanović and Stanković".
The government should have canceled the rally
NPS MP Đorđe Stanković responded via social media to Vučić that the authorities should work in compliance with the law, not the wishes of the President of Serbia.
"The anger that was seen in the streets is a consequence of the 16th victim and the least the government could do was to cancel the party meeting. Some instead showed the middle finger to the citizens and continued with provocations. The continuation of this situation does not lead to reconciliation in society, but only to an even greater division. It is not good that emotions lead the state and society, but reason and interests for the well-being of all citizens. It is unfortunate that we have started to be proud of things that are not obviously something to be proud of, but have become the only way to express dissatisfaction," said Stankovic.
Dragan Milić, the head of the councilor group that bears his name, also spoke out, condemning the attack on the mayor and appealing to everyone to stop physical violence.
"Torches, cannon shots, tear gas, physical attacks on political dissidents will bring the most benefit to the parties in power. If we respond to violence with violence, then we are the same. This is not our Nis. Hate, anger and aggression have never brought good," wrote Milić on his accounts on social networks.
He asks that the police urgently determine, identify and inform the public "who are the culprits of this shameful incident", but also points out that the GG "Dr. Dragan Milić" and the Movement for Decentralization of Serbia (PODES) neither supported nor participated in the organization of the meeting, fearing that there would be riots.
"We will fight until the last breath to get this freak government out of power. But not with violence. But in the elections. With a pencil. The municipality of Medijana is proof that this is possible. If we ourselves do not save our city and all of Nišlije (including those with whom we disagree), who will?", said Milić.
Niš deliberately pushed into conflicts
For opposition councilor Tamara Milenković Kerković, Niš was deliberately pushed into conflicts, while Niš's SNS was deliberately exposed as a "clay pigeon".
"If yesterday's 'regular SNS party activity with the highest officials' scheduled in Niš, represented a set of enormous risk, the government must have known all the previous days. It is obvious that holding the meeting at any cost was a deliberate and deliberate provocation of Nišli. A reasonable and responsible government would react by canceling the meeting and protecting the citizens from conflict. The main 'troika' of course did not come. Neither did the one who decided not to cancel the meeting. The 'clay pigeons' of those who decided to hold the meeting, despite everything, were Niš members and SNS officials, there were Niš policemen, and there were people from Niš who protested," Milenković Kerković points out.
She calls on students and residents of Niš not to abandon peaceful resistance "because it is the biggest threat to the regime."
"Protests must continue and remain peaceful because everything else will be used to repress students. Students and educators have been the biggest victims of the regime during the last four months. We must not allow what the regime and the Incompetent President want - an escalation of violence," she said.
It also demands that detained students must have a fair, legal and transparent, and not ordered, procedure. Let us remind you that three students were detained last night, and as reported by the students in the blockade of the University of Nis, the reasons for their arrest are not yet known.
