Trial four activists Serbian Progressive Party SK (30), ND (22), NB (22) and DR (22), accused of attack on students at the end of January, was postponed on Monday (June 16) in the Basic Court in Novi Sad to June 30, because one of the defendants did not appear.
According to his lawyer, he was hospitalized at the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, portal 021 reports.
The judge was also handed over the report from the Criminal Code, which was read in the courtroom, and according to which the defendant DR was admitted and the control should be a day later or, if necessary, earlier. When asked by the court if this means that the defendant is not in the KCV, the lawyer said that at the time of the trial he is in that medical institution and that the court can contact the Clinical Center for details, writes FoNet.
The prosecutor of the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad suggested postponing the hearing, as well as sending a request to the Clinical Center of Vojvodina for a report on the admission and reasons for the defendant's admission, as well as whether he was kept for treatment and why.
The judge therefore adjourned the hearing to June 30, and immediately scheduled the continuation of the trial for July 15, by which time all the witnesses should be examined and the expert report of the recordings should be made and the report submitted.
After the end of the hearing, those present testified that one of the defendants and a member of the court guard hugged in front of the courtroom.
This caused great indignation of the citizens who came to listen to the trial, as well as the witnesses who appeared in court and saw what happened.
The lawyer of the injured students, Vladimir Beljanski, said after the trial that, until the official response of the Clinical Center of Vojvodina arrives, he considers the fact that the defendant was allegedly admitted to this institution on the day of the scheduled hearing a way of obstructing the proceedings and a reason for finding an unjustified reason for delaying the trial.
He adds that, if it is determined that this was not the reason for failing to appear at the trial, there is a possibility of imposing a more severe measure, including detention.
Beljanski also points out that the situation witnessed by those present after the trial, when one of the defendants said goodbye to the court guard, is inadmissible, but it is a matter for further action by the authorities.
Several citizens gathered in front of the court this morning to support the attacked students, and a part of them entered the courtroom to listen to the hearing.
Student's jaw broken
In the night between January 27 and 28, they were on two occasions attacked students in the blockade of the faculty in Novi Sad.
First, the students of the Faculty of Medicine were attacked in front of the SNS premises on the Boulevard of Liberation, after which a group of students of the Academy of Arts were attacked near the elementary school "Petefi Sandor".
The Academy student's jaw was then broken.
SNS activists SK (30), ND (22), NB (22) and DR (22) are suspected of having committed the criminal acts of violent behavior in complicity and causing serious injury.
The prosecution is asking for three years in prison for two of the suspects, and two and a half years for the other two.
They are accused of leaving the SNS premises, attacking students and using a baseball bat on that occasion.
At the public prosecutor's hearing, all four defended themselves by remaining silent, but they presented their defense before the court. However, they refused to answer any additional questions from the prosecutor, the judge or the lawyers of the injured students.
According to the decision of the High Court in Novi Sad at the beginning of June, S. K, NB and DR were released from custody
For one defendant, N. D, custody was replaced by a measure prohibiting him from leaving the apartment with the application of electronic surveillance.
This violent event was the direct reason for the resignations of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević and Mayor of Novi Sad Milan Đurić.
