Arrest of students u Novi Pazar on the third day of Eid, encouraged the citizens of that city to gather in front of the police station today, March 22.
On March 22, the police detained two students from Novi Pazar, and members of the Novi Pazar Citizens' Association, fellow students and disgruntled fellow citizens gathered in protest in front of the local police administration, a FoNet reporter reported.
Students detained
According to unofficial information gathered by the crowd, a student of the State University in Novi Pazar and a student of the Faculty of Law in Kragujevac were detained.
The police came to their addresses with a search warrant, and as the reason for their detention, the accusation of "destroying the constitutional order" is unofficially mentioned because of the alleged threats addressed to the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
Citizens do not hide their indignation at the way and time of the arrest, and they especially point out their dissatisfaction that the action was carried out on Sunday, on the third day of Eid al-Fitr, the biggest Muslim holiday.
According to eyewitnesses, the apprehension action seemed "disproportionately strict".
"When I saw that four police cars arrived with about twenty policemen, I thought they were arresting a big drug dealer or a murderer. We are appalled by today's act. Instead of celebrating, visiting relatives and friends after 30 days of fasting, we have to stand here and worry about what will happen to our children," said one of the citizens.
A show of force
Those gathered suspect that the real purpose of today's arrest is "a demonstration of force and silencing the youth."
"This is repression and intimidation, so that tomorrow no one would think to raise their voice against some injustice, to write a comment or put a like on social networks. It seems that we are only expected to be silent and bow our heads," he added.
According to an earlier report by Nova.rs based on student testimony, three DUNP students were arrested.
The police and the prosecutor's office have not yet announced anything about this case.
