At the Faculty of Medicine University in Belgrade on Tuesday, around 700 professors sat down and voted for a general strike after a long and heated discussion. It starts on Monday, March 17, and will run until filled student requests.
The professors will stop the specialist exams, as well as the passing of the doctorate. Lectures and exams in regular studies are normally not held because the Faculty is under blockade, writes the Nova portal.
"Everything stops on Monday." We will no longer hold specialist exams, nor will we hold doctorate examinations, which have been held until now. There is nothing until the government fulfills the students' demands," says the doctor, a professor at this faculty, who insisted on remaining anonymous.
She says that the discussion at the Council lasted a long time and was fierce.
"This faculty has always been a hotbed of SNS, but some things seem to be changing." We had a heated argument, there were almost physical confrontations, but we fought for the strike. Until now, we have held specializations properly, despite the blockade, but that is also stopping now," says the professor.
Unforgettable ovations
The surprise for everyone was the support of the dean of the Faculty of Medicine, prof. Dr. Tatjana Simić.
"The dean supported us and even declared that 'we are writing the history of the faculty!'"
According to her, the medical students stood all the time at the entrance to the hall where the teaching council was sitting, waiting for the decision. When they announced that they were going on strike, an unforgettable ovation followed.
"They greeted us with a standing ovation and are very proud of us, but we also stand by our decision." I can't believe we were able to come to an agreement. This is a revolution!", says the professor.
