A group of citizens was invited by the initiative "The bridge remains", blocked the approach of trucks to the construction site from the Neovobeograd side Old Sava bridge.
The protest is led by opposition MPs Đorđe Miketić, Branko Miljuš and Mila Popović, who pointed out that the demolition of the bridge was started illegally, without a single document or permit.
Citizens placed containers in the middle of the street near the Old Fairground. They closed it to traffic.
The rally is provided by around 200 police officers in equipment for breaking up demonstrations, and there are more than thirty protest participants in civilian clothes.
The protest proceeds without incident.
How long the protest and blockade will last, none of the organizers could specify - they said: "Until then".
MP Đorđe Miketić called on the citizens not to attack or insult the policemen who secure the bridge on both sides in cordons.
This is a peaceful protest, please - no confrontation with the police. We will only prevent the passage of their trucks and construction machines, said Miketić.
He told the policemen that the participants of the meeting will not fight with them, because it is a duly registered peaceful protest.
Miketić repeated the demands regarding the adoption of a decision prohibiting the demolition of the bridge and pointed out that the contractors do not have any permission for it, claiming that they have all been canceled.
The organizers demand that, in addition to stopping the demolition of the bridge, it is forbidden to cross it with trucks weighing more than 3,5 tons, its reconstruction is carried out and the existing appearance is maintained, as well as that it be declared a cultural asset.
