A shipment of cucumbers from Serbia was stopped at the Croatian border because, as stated on the RASFF website, chlorpyrifos was found, and the cargo from Serbia was marked as potentially risky.
The permitted amount is 0,01 mg/kg, and the shipment contained 0,060 mg/kg of residues of this pesticide.
Last year at this time, RASFF announced that fresh cucumbers from Serbia intended for the Slovenian market were also stopped at the border.
As stated on the website at the time, the fungicide metalaxyl was found in them, and after the control at the border it was decided to destroy the cucumbers.
Illicit substances are not only in food
Before that, last August, a shipment of Serbian chips was not distributed in Croatia, because it contained a high level of carcinogenic acrylamide.
Not long after, peaches were also returned from the Croatian border, in which more pesticides than allowed were found. Also, at the beginning of July, peaches produced in our country were returned from the border with Slovenia, due to the high concentration of the pesticide chlorpyrifos.
At the end of August, plums from Serbia were also returned from the border with Croatia, due to residues of the pesticide chlorpyrifos and potential health risks. A month earlier, a shipment of smoked salmon arrived back from the same border because of the bacteria that causes listeriosis (Listeria monocytogenes).
The return of goods from Serbia does not only apply to food, but also to other products such as, for example, paper straws or alcoholic beverages.
