The campaign started on December 15, and the students themselves described what the people who knock on their doors can expect. The students were divided into groups, and in each group there were at least two students - a candidate for that constituency or a resident of that village. People who heard about them mostly welcomed them with open arms and smiles on their faces, the students told the media.
Some citizens, who did not read the news that the students started visiting the thresholds, were fearful. There were also those who did not want to receive them because they thought they were from SNS, but they also overcame those obstacles by presenting themselves.
Students talk to people about large protest on December 28 in Belgrade, but also about the importance calling for parliamentary elections.
Open to students
"Knock, knock! Who is it? Students!" From Monday, December 22, Niš students are coming to your door. We don't just come to knock, we come to start a conversation," the students wrote on the networks. "We want to get to know each other, to hear each other, to connect and network. We believe that trust is built face to face and that change begins when people look at each other and talk."
He added that they will come to the doors of fellow citizens "as neighbors, as young people with questions, ideas and the desire to build a better society together."
"Let's declare victory together - we need a huge workforce, controllers, observers, mobile teams, but also the will to go out on election day, vote and fight for justice," they said.
The importance of direct contact
The students, like no one else in Serbia, realized how important it is to talk to the people live. That's why they are walked the length and breadth of the country and thus passed through even the smallest places, reaching people who are normally referred to the regime's media. Then they organized large protests throughout the cities of Serbia, but also took to the streets in almost every municipality.
They also had the "Student in every village" campaign, with which they went to citizens who do not have social networks and for whom it means a lot to talk to someone live.
What is "door to door"?
The "door to door" system or the English "door to door" involves getting to know clients, voters or the very people we want to influence, and it has a long tradition in sales, but also in politics or fund-raising campaigns, raising awareness of a problem.
Organized reaching out to the people dates back to elections in the Roman Republic. In those campaigns, candidates would shake hands with all eligible voters, whereas in modern times, the door-to-door system was introduced in Great Britain and is widely used in America. In Serbia, since the introduction of multi-party system, it has been practiced by all parties, mostly in the pre-election campaign.
Humanitarian organizations go "door to door" in the world en masse, but also in Serbia occasionally, in order to collect money for certain actions or point out certain infrastructural problems of the local community.
