Teachers, teachers and professors in more than 500 schools and higher education institutions, members of the Preporod trade union, the Independent Trade Union of Secondary School Employees Croatia (NSZSŠH) and the Independent Union of Science and Higher Education are on a one-day strike on Wednesday (March 19).
The unions went on strike after a failed negotiation process in which they presented five demands to the government, three for improving material status and two for non-material status.
The trade unionists are demanding a 10 percent increase in the salary base instead of the current 3+3 percent, redefinition of the coefficients through the Regulation on coefficients, a temporary addition to the regulation of the system of coefficients, the exemption of the science and education system from evaluation defined by the Law on Wages and the Rulebook on Valuation, a delay in the introduction of the reform of professional education and the systematization of certain workplaces through new regulations.
The government threatens: We will not pay you for the strike
The government immediately replied that there was no reason for the strike. Minister of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy Marin Piletić threatened that the announced strike will not be paid. "We will not agree to such blackmail," Piletić said briefly, Croatian portal Indeks reports.
He said that at the session of the parliamentary majority, they explained in detail how much wages have been increased in the last few years (48 percent basic and 37 percent increase through coefficients) and stated that the Government believes that there is no need to strike in the week when the republican exams are held.
The strike takes place in the week when eighth grade students in Croatia take the national exam.
