Of all the local media, only the Klima 101 portal announced that the General Assembly of the United Nations voted that everyone in the world has the right to a healthy, clean and sustainable environment. Serbia voted - for. By the way, we owe the planet Earth resources that would take 19 years to renew
The United Nations has declared a healthy environment as a human right. Although Serbia also took part in making this decision, of all local media (judging by Google), this historic decision was published only by the Klima 101 portal.
So: The General Assembly of the United Nations declared that everyone in the world has the right to a healthy, clean and sustainable environment. The resolution was adopted on July 28, at the UN headquarters in New York.
161 countries voted for its adoption, including Serbia. Eight were abstentions.
Although the resolution is not binding on the 193 UN members, it is expected to encourage states to include this right in national constitutions and regional agreements, as well as to implement these laws. Supporters also point out that this United Nations decision will provide additional funding for activists who oppose environmentally destructive regulations and projects.
"This resolution sends a message that no one can take away nature, clean air and water, or a stable climate - at least not without a fight," said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, also welcomed the historic decision. According to him, this significant development shows that member states can join together in the fight against the planetary crisis, which includes three areas - climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution.
This resolution is considered a very important document in the mission to curb the accelerated deterioration of the natural world.
Due to circumstances, on that same day humanity consumed all the natural resources that the Earth can produce in a year and thus entered into an "ecological debt", i. which is also important, two days earlier than last year.
The date when humans use up the Earth's resources each year is calculated by the Global Footprint Network.
The information of that organization is warning. For example: to restore everything humanity needs from nature, the biocapacity of 1,75 of the planet Earth would be needed. Three billion people live in countries that produce less food than they consume and earn less than the world average, it said.
The fact that humans have been consuming more of the Earth's resources than they have for 50 years now means that the total annual deficits have produced an ecological debt equal to 19 years of planetary regeneration.
