In recent days, there has been a slight increase in the number of newly infected people in Serbia. The doctors demanded an urgent meeting of the Crisis Staff. Immunologist Srđa Janković said earlier that doctors in the Crisis Staff will demand that New Year's parties are not organized, and that the minimum requirement will be that gatherings are allowed only to those who have been vaccinated.
Instead, the Minister for Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Darija Kisić Tepavčević repeated the appeals to citizens to get vaccinated and concluded that the current measures should be continued.
Deputy Mayor of Belgrade Goran Vesić repeated on that occasion that you cannot take away the right of "40.000 people" to earn something over the holidays, and that the City respects all measures, which is admittedly not observed in practice, and Health Minister Zlatibor Lončar said that "the state is neither mother nor dad" and that it is up to the citizens to decide how and if they will protect themselves.
Head of Government Ato Brnabic told those who are now questioning the decision of the Crisis Staff not to tighten the measures, that they are "hypocrites", because they did not mind the mass gathering during road blockades in Serbia.
However, it will not be so casual everywhere, as allowed by the Crisis Staff.
Due to the epidemiological situation, Subotica previously canceled the reception on the City Square, and the funds were redirected to help children and young people.
In Montenegro, bans on all types of New Year's celebrations were introduced, including welcoming on the streets and in closed spaces, but they were subsequently relaxed, and now it is allowed to celebrate in bars, but only with a Covid pass.
In Sarajevo, the reception was also canceled, while in Zagreb, the city celebration will only be possible with passes.
Considering the restrictive measures in the region, the arrival of a large number of tourists who want to enjoy Serbia's epidemiological freedom can be expected in Belgrade.
In most European capitals, mass New Year's celebrations have been canceled due to the pandemic, in some places the work of bars will be limited until 31 p.m. on December 23. It is feared that mass gatherings would lead to a large increase in new infections, primarily due to the highly contagious new Omicron strain.
On Tuesday, Serbia recorded 1.676 new cases and 24 deaths. Over 40 percent of the population has not been vaccinated.
