Students called for a rally in front of "Informer" on March 29
Students of the Faculty of Political Sciences in the blockade called for a gathering on Saturday (March 29) in front of "Informer"
The Autonomous Women's Center condemned the publication of an interview with multiple convicted rapist Igor Milošević in the daily newspaper "Informer" and on their YouTube channel, because it is "a direct promotion of the crime of rape and the convicted rapist".
"The publication of this interview is a slap first of all to all women who have survived sexual violence from the person in question, but also to all those who have been investing energy for days in devising tactics for walking safely on the streets of Belgrade, because there is no systemic protection and they feel that they are left to their own devices." stated the Autonomous Women's Center (AŽC) in a statement.
It is stated that the correct argument of the editorial office of "Informer" is that many media around the world interview rapists and murderers so that the public can understand how they think, but that the specific interview in "Informer" does not serve that purpose, because it lacks context and sensibility, as and professionalism and that it exclusively contributes not only to the relativization, but also to the direct promotion of the crime of rape and the convicted rapist.
Due to this case, the Autonomous Women's Center will contact the Press Council and the Ministry of Culture and Information during the day, and has also called on the commissioner for the protection of equality, the protector of citizens, the president of the Coordinating Body for Gender Equality and the Journalism Profession and Associations to react in their jurisdiction. in order to minimize the damage done and to prevent this from happening again.
And the Network for Democratic Dialogue assessed that after yesterday's headlines in the "Informer" newspaper, it once again "spat in the face of all victims of violence, primarily women who were victims of a rapist who got his own media space."
The Network for Democratic Dialogue points out that this kind of promotion of violent people "deserves the harshest condemnation not only from the general public but also from the state, which should react uncompromisingly and ban any further writing and existence of the newspaper 'Informer'".
"Regardless of the fact that this is not the first time that victims of violence go through additional rounds of hell because of unscrupulous journalists and news houses in whose name they are abused again and again, one must be decisive." "The Informer" newspaper is not the only one that cares only about clicks, and at the expense of the victims, without any shame or ethics, but it is certainly the first one that should be held accountable for the damage they cause," the announcement states.
A protest is underway in front of the newsroom of "Informer" in Terazije.
