While people from all parts of Serbia gather in Belgrade to protest which is expected to be the largest in the history of the state, in Vlasotince i Cacak sessions of local parliaments were scheduled, and citizens gathered in front of them.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, called the citizens of Čačak criminals and "orthodox fraudsters".
"In particular, we will deal with one city where I am ashamed, where we have invested the most, where our people are most afraid of orthodox fraudsters and petty criminals..." said the president at the Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party.
On Saturday (March 15), opposition councilors and citizens of Čačak prevented the holding of the session of the City Assembly, which was supposed to discuss the dismissal of Mayor Milutin Todorović and the entire city leadership, reports FoNet.
The session was convened at the request of opposition councilors, but the ruling majority scheduled its holding for the first time in history during the weekend, in order to obstruct the march to Belgrade for the protest.
In the meantime, all items on the agenda, including the most important discussion on the dismissal of Mayor Milutin Todorović and the entire city leadership, were removed from the agenda and replaced by others, according to the opposition, unimportant.
That maneuver caused a revolt by councilors and citizens of Čačak, who gathered much earlier, before the session began, in front of the city parliament building.
The president of the Čačak City Assembly, Igor Trifunović, appeared at the main entrance and provoked the citizens, which was followed by a cannonade of eggs, from which the police stationed at the entrance failed to protect him.
The second incident occurred not long after that, when members of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) tried to enter the assembly hall. The opposition councilors stationed in front of the entrance did not allow them to do so, so there was mutual pushing and exchange of insults, but the opposition councilors managed to prevent the SNS councilors from entering the hall.
Even Mayor Todorović failed to do so, and after a ten-minute discussion with the opposition, he refused to enter, after which it became certain that the session would not be held.
Numerous gendarmerie forces equipped to break up demonstrations were deployed in the building of the Čačak City Assembly, but they did not intervene, even when opposition councilors prevented SNS councilors from entering the assembly hall, reports FoNet.
