Will it medical students in Niš to start college from mid-April - it depends on who you listen to.
The faculty management announced that they will start compensating classes, mostly online, while clinical subjects will be held in clinics. Students in the blockade of the Niš Faculty of Medicine say that conducting online classes is illegal, that the Administration is consciously manipulating administrative procedures and directly endangers the future of its students. That is why they call for a boycott of such classes, the Southern News write.
There has been a lot of turmoil in the past few days at this faculty. On April 10, the students physically prevented the employees from entering the building of that institution, because at the plenum they decided to remain in the blockade until the demands were met, and then the police broke into the faculty and interrogated the students and professors. The management has decided that classes will be held - but combined and to a greater extent online.
What does the Administration say?
As stated in the notice published on the official website of the Faculty of Medicine, starting from April 15, they will start with a "dynamic plan for compensation of teaching", while respecting the modality of combined teaching approved by the Ministry of Education from April 4.
Reimbursement of practical and theoretical classes for pre-clinical courses from the winter semester will be held online in accordance with the conclusion of the Commission for Accreditation and Quality Control of the National Accreditation Body, while for clinical courses classes will be combined. They say that they do everything in accordance with the Law on Higher Education, the Statute of the Faculty and the Conclusion of the Commission for Accreditation and Quality Control of the National Accreditation Body.
What do students say about the blockade?
They claim that conducting such classes is illegal.
For the implementation of online classes in higher education, the Regulation of the Ministry of Education is mandatory - a document that is issued only in extraordinary circumstances, as was the case during the covid-19 pandemic.
"The decree that our faculty had at the time expired in February of this year. Since the country is not currently in a state of emergency, it is clear that the faculty does not have a legal basis for switching to this form of teaching," state the students in the blockade.
They note that, in addition to the fact that conducting online classes is illegitimate and represents a gross violation of the law and academic ethics, it directly threatens the future of its students.
"Online teaching, carried out without appropriate conditions and quality control, directly threatens the legitimacy and value of our diploma. The professors of our faculty themselves are aware of the dangers of acquiring knowledge in this way. This creates a gap between us and colleagues who graduated from the same faculty under regular conditions in previous years - and puts us in an unequal position," they note.
They say that the proposal on the teaching plan was adopted as flexible, and that it will come into force only when the conditions are met, that is, the student's demands are met. That is why, as they point out, they call on their colleagues to boycott.
