19.June 2025 Jovana Đurđić

Problems under the carpet

We expect state institutions to take responsibility and start acting systematically. Concrete steps are needed, a clear legal framework, strengthening of health capacities and real readiness for dialogue

The Faculty of Medicine is on strike

Health services will not be threatened by the strike, and the Teaching Council of the faculty supported the decision that the strike should continue until the student demands are met.

Organ transplantation in Serbia

11.February 2025. Katarina Stevanović

To get a kidney in Belarus

There are about 600 people on the waiting list for a kidney transplant in Serbia, and in 2024 only 17 of them will be transplanted. That's why many are looking for salvation in Belarus, where, however, the operation costs tens of thousands of euros. Unlike Serbia, Montenegro has been covering the costs of transplants in that country for its citizens since last year

Patients' rights

05.December 2024. MS

State neglect of dialysis patients

The quality of life of people with invisible disabilities, as well as their position, is seriously threatened. That is why the panel discussion "Dignity for All" was organized with the aim of pointing out the specific challenges that these people face. What are the conclusions of that discussion

Dragan Milić: And Zlatibor Lončar responsible for waiting lists

Of course, Zlatibor Lončar is responsible for the waiting lists, he led the Ministry of Health. Waiting lists are a matter of organization and can be cleared without any problem if there is a will to do so. The scandal is obviously that this is a political issue, Milić said

The cataclysm of the healthcare system

"I believe that today's health system survives to some extent only thanks to humanity, the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices of health workers," public health expert Predrag Đurić told Vreme.

Difficult, but routine

As soon as I lay down, folded my hands on my (now bare) chest and began to imagine a happy awakening after a successful operation, a nurse and a surgeon entered the room: "Branko, we have two emergencies. We will have to postpone your operation”. "Of course," I say, my head boiling. I don't have seizures and I certainly can and should wait for someone to be rescued. "Do you know the new term?", somehow I blurted out. No

How to get justice for medical malpractice

After the case of the mother Marica Mihajlović in Sremska Mitrovica disturbed the entire public, again, for the first time in the last twenty years, women are coming out in public and sharing their experiences from childbirth or after it. The majority of the public fully understands the problem and has sympathy for what women are going through. A smaller part, however, has strong, mostly superfluous questions: why did they remain silent, why did they not go private, why did they not sue... The editors of "Vremena" were contacted by a woman whose case illustrates that even when both mother and baby survive, and when an error occurs in to a private clinic, even when she decides to file a criminal complaint - it's not worth it

"Time" file: Memoirs of a heart patient

31.January 2024. Branko Chechen

Fear and admiration

A year had to pass since the installation of three bypasses to try to describe the experience of a few weeks in the arms of Serbian healthcare. There I watched in amazement how ordinary people every day, few in number, in terrible conditions, poorly paid and insufficiently respected, do real feats to return us to our loved ones and society in a usable condition. At a time when we are witnessing the unimaginably evil actions of some healthcare workers, I think it is in the vital public interest that we do not identify the white coats with such atrocities and that we are prepared to see those among them who, despite the inhuman environment, still shine with humanity

Dossier "Vremena": Health in politics

31.January 2024. Aleksandra Krstić

The use of the reputation of the white coat

In considering the relationship between doctors and politicians, Cunningham wrote in the fifties of the 20th century that the "doctor's dilemma" stems from the fact that politics is a "business of dirty hands", while medicine has always been a profession of "clean hands" - perhaps it can be interpret today's obsessive need of politicians to surround themselves with the support and authority of doctors, surgeons and heads of hospitals

ZLF: We will restore dignity to the health profession

"Just one in a series of examples of the catastrophic situation in health centers across the country is the Health Center in Vranje, which has not had a single gynecologist for four weeks, which leaves many women without the opportunity to be examined," said Biljana Đorđević.
