Government response to peaceful protests

Invoking war in the name of peace

The regime and its media have been trumpeting the "civil war" for months, and the government is the only one that has a patent for peace and stability - of course, with the help of the propaganda machine and the use of force. "It is a propaganda tactic of SNS that says: 'violence is everywhere, terrorists surround us, but we are here to save you,'" explains communication professor Jelena Kleut for "Vreme".

Taking life back into your own hands

When one makes even a superficial specification of the scope so far, that is, political and social changes during the winter struggle of citizens for a normal Serbia, things are not bad. It is not an empty optimism. Let's try to sort things out with some logic

The People's Movement for Check-In and Check-Out

The largest gathering in the history of Serbia, according to the announcements of the President of Serbia, was supposed to be held on March 28. But as loudly as it was announced, it was quietly cancelled. A new progressive gathering has been scheduled from April 11 to 13, with "a lot of content", all with the aim of once again presenting the new movement that was unsuccessfully announced years ago. Then the public will probably find out what is wrong with the personnel and program of the Serbian Progressive Party, so the "proud member" wants to distance himself from them. But that will still be a topic

"Students 2.0": It is important (not) to be called students

Although "versioning" is not a fully developed concept in social-humanistic contexts, apparently someone's idea was to insert the 2.0 supplement to "modernize" the narrative, which intuitively suggests to the external audience that it is about some more updated and up-to-date practice, i.e. the group, not about the students

Things are even worse.

"It is very wrong that Serbia's progress in the fight against corruption at a high level is measured only on the basis of statistical data on the number of indictments of the Prosecutor's Office for organized crime and accompanying verdicts. In Serbia, the performance in that field should be measured first of all by whether there were cases where the corrupt participation of high state officials was suspected - and those cases were not investigated"

Vučić: Violence is inevitable

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, stated that the new mandate will be discussed only after the formal resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević, stressing that he will not allow the formation of a transitional government. Vučić warned of plans for violence during the protest and urged young people not to participate in it

Arrests for pennies

In February, as part of the "fight against corruption", 153 people were arrested and charged with a total of slightly more than twenty million euros. In progressive Serbia, these can only be small fish

Fear and paranoia in the SNS

What do the arrests of the middle and bantamweight progressive cadres really represent? How does Vučić militarize the party with this? And why its attraction is being demagnetized

Who took American money and who took Serbian money

The "combing" of non-governmental organizations is a confrontation with critics of the regime. If not, the prosecutor would first knock on the door of Ana Brnabić, who was the thorn in the side of USAID. Those who "comb" are for Ana the third league

The country we live in

In Serbia, no one knows what its president is talking about anymore, journalists are punished by God's justice, scandal-mongering magnates are declared saints, and public office holders spread public scandal. People - how long will we go like this

The wave of delegitimization of government is unstoppable

The student protest marches map a new Serbia that self-identifies as a Serbia freed from fear (...) Every place the students passed through, anthropologically speaking, participated in the transition process. That transition was from a state of anxiety and anguish to something that those who participated in the students' receptions, according to their own statements, experienced as a newly acquired freedom. It is difficult to find something similar in the recent political history of Serbia

Lie and paralysis

The strained political relations in Serbia led to an intense propaganda war through the media. While RTS is desperately trying to reconcile the irreconcilable positions of the government and the opposition, commercial channels controlled by the government are conducting an intensive campaign primarily against students, educators, non-governmental organizations and NGO activists. To this list should be added influencers on social networks who are a specific thorn in the side of Vučić's and his activists' attempts to conquer virtual space in cyberspace.

The fight against corruption as government marketing in Serbia

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, once again announced a decisive fight against corruption, activating the prosecution and initiating arrests. However, experts point out that this is a temporary move, aimed at reducing political tensions, and not an essential solution to the problem of systemic corruption.

Moralocracy

The frequent warning "Shame on you" is not a verbal refrain of A. V's public appearances, but a framework for moralizing one's own integrity over other people's immorality. Embarrassing the opposition is not banal, but an active planned shaming and pretension for dominance. It is easy to understand that it is easier to rule when moral supremacy is ensured. However, it is risky to create an explosive climate in which the good are allowed to hate the bad with a clear conscience.

Progressives in a situation with no favorable way out

"I would like us to remember this feeling. This will never be a functioning democracy without active citizens, people who are willing to sacrifice their time and show the people in power what they think. However this ends, we need to remember what it looks like to be an active citizen. The government then reacts. It will not be good to let the political elites finish this. Power without control turns into absolute power, we have seen that in this country many times in a couple of decades. The institutions are weak, the civil sector is not really capable of such a thing, we all know what the media are like - there is no one to be that controller except the citizens themselves."

Anatomy of petty matchmaking generosity

In the lobby of the heart of darkness, we would probably not find much more than a small, insecure and not very interesting boy, without any special gifts, but too hungry for attention, appreciation and recognition to miss the opportunity to abuse poorly controlled political power and shape reality to fulfill his needs

Serbia without a government and without REM

While Serbian citizens take to the streets en masse and students brutally fight each other, the country is left without two key pillars of government - the government and the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM). At the same time, the process of electing new members of REM, the body that should ensure the independence of the media space, completely fell apart due to irregularities and political manipulations that led to the withdrawal of candidates from most of the nomination areas.

A Serbia worth fighting for

The rebellion of young people, students and high school students, introduced a whole series of new elements into social and political life. In the first place, the student revolt renewed hope in Serbia. The students turned on the light and that light cannot be extinguished. That cheerfulness, that liveliness, that triumph of life and new ideas, that freedom from old forms, old and outmoded thinking, old fears and malignant propaganda - that's the breath of freedom that the country longed for, but had neither the luck nor the strength to take. get home
