Female students in the women's dormitory in the center of Belgrade reported serious threats to their own safety. Such cases often end without finding the culprit, and young women continue to live in fear
Zeleni venc, New Belgrade blocks, the area around the Arena, Ušće, the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Mostarska petlja, Autokomanda... These are the parts of Belgrade where the most girls and women experience some form of sexual violence
Famous French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo is under fire for a "disgusting cartoon" depicting the case of Giselle Pellicot, a woman who accused her husband of drugging her for a decade and inviting men online to rape her. However, the immediate public outrage doesn't erase the fact that her husband's male recruiting site had over 500.000 monthly visitors.
Despite all the tactics that girls invest in to prevent sexual violence from happening to them, it still happens en masse - regardless of "invisibility", regardless of age, regardless of lifestyle or personal characteristics. It happens on the street, in transport, on the Internet, in educational and health institutions, at training, within the family... As UNICEF claims, often precisely from those whom the child knows and trusts, in places where it should be feels safe
The case of Giselle Pellicot, an elderly woman who was drugged and abused by her husband for years, caused a shock in France and the world. The public took to the streets, and the issue of legal protection for victims of violence is becoming more and more urgent. Will this case lead to sex offender law reform?
Female students of the Faculty of Political Sciences decided to establish a support group at the faculty, whose main goal is to stop sexual violence. They also want to make the faculty a safe environment for all students
Around fifty female students protested in front of the Faculty of Political Sciences against the election of Slavisa Orlović as dean due to earlier accusations against him of sexual violence. Activists say that some accusations also refer to Professor Miloš Bešić
According to this year's survey on the position of women in the world, which includes 177 countries, Serbia took 32nd place. Denmark is at the top of the list, and for women in Europe, in addition to Ukraine, Kosovo and Azerbaijan are the worst.
Why are the voices of representatives of religious communities important? Why are they mostly silent? What messages can we hear lately? What is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about family walks? And what else could we think of?

An unknown man entered the student's room through the window and put his hand over her mouth, they announced Students in the blockade. It is the female student dormitory Vera Blagojević 2, which is located on Palilula, near the Botanical Garden, almost in the very center of Belgrade.
The man easily entered the room on the ground floor through a window on which no bars were installed. Female students have reported that an elderly man has been watching them in the same dormitory for days through windows with transparent curtains.
"After they reported the case, they received a response from the authorities that 'they cannot guarantee safety in Belgrade' and that they cannot even provide opaque curtains," according to the Students in Blockade Instagram profile.
The students demand the installation of physical protection on the windows, increased security measures, respect for the privacy of students and the responsibility of those who are obliged to protect them.
"Any further silence means accepting that such attacks will be repeated," the students pointed out.
Life in fear
Vanja Macanović from the Autonomous Women's Center tells "Vreme" that the first thing the competent services do when victims contact them is to ask them for evidence.
"If there is a man watching them, the female students are asked to record the persecution," explains Macanović. "The other question is what about the guards in the home itself and the security cameras."
It's summer, it's impossible to keep the windows closed, even those on the ground floor, so it's clear that the girls feel unsafe and vulnerable after these incidents.
The experience of AŽC shows that such reports often end without an epilogue, that is, the perpetrator is not found, and the victims continue to live in fear.
"These cases are covered up or downplayed," says Macanović.
Two out of five women surveyed experienced sexual harassment from the age of 15 onwards, and 18 percent of them experienced such an experience in the last 12 months, according to the AJC survey.
The student dormitory Vera Blagojević is the first one intended only for the female population, precisely for the reason that female students would feel as safe as possible. It is named after the participants of the National Liberation War and the national heroine of Yugoslavia.
