If Serbia leaves the Council of Europe, citizens will not be able to appear before the court in Strasbourg

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that Serbia will leave the Council of Europe if Kosovo becomes a member of this international organization. Apart from deviating Serbia from the European path, the realization of this threat would cause another consequence: citizens of Serbia would no longer be able to appear before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, lawyer Jovan Rajić told Vreme.

The Duma and the European Court of Human Rights: Everyone goes their own way

For the authorities in Moscow, the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights will no longer be binding. Although the case of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny shows that the Kremlin did not care about the judgments of the court in Strasbourg even before, the State Duma, by adopting new laws, formally broke with the European international body that obliges to respect human rights.
