At least 12 people died in earthquake 7,8 degrees on the Richter scale that hit today Philippines. More than 200 people were injured.
After the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued in the Philippines, in neighboring Indonesia, as well as a warning from the US Tsunami Warning System.
Residents in coastal areas were advised to take shelter on higher ground.
The Philippines and Indonesia record hundreds of earthquakes each year and are located on geologically complex parts of the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire," a seismically active belt that stretches from South America to the Russian Far East.
The German Research Center for Geosciences said the 7,8-magnitude earthquake hit the area at a depth of 10 kilometers. That institution previously estimated the magnitude at 8,2 units. The geophysical services of the Philippines and Indonesia announced that the magnitude was 7,0 and 7,7 units, respectively.
Eyewitnesses in the Indonesian city of Manado, as well as residents and officials in the southern Philippines, said the earthquake was strongly felt.
