The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, said on December 14 that the Israeli army destroyed several targets, including a research center north of Damascus. Radio Free Europe.
Since Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was ousted from power, the Israeli Air Force has frequently carried out large-scale airstrikes on military facilities in Syria.
In 28 airstrikes, the eastern region of Qalamoun, about 90 kilometers north of the capital Damascus, was hit. Israeli warplanes targeted and destroyed a weapons depot, a military airport and underground tunnels, the monitoring group added.
The victory by the rebels, led by the Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which seized control of Damascus last weekend, ended more than 53 years of rule by the al-Assad family.
The United States and the European Union have declared HTS a terrorist group.
Diplomats meet in Jordan to discuss Syria's future
Arab foreign ministers are meeting in Jordan on Saturday with international representatives to discuss the future of Syria - without the presence of Syrians.
Jordan's foreign ministry said the meeting aimed to explore ways to support the country during the transition phase following the fall of longtime leader Bashar al-Assad.
The goal of the talks is to guarantee an inclusive Syrian-led political process that includes all groups within the fractured country.
According to Jordanian sources, the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar will attend the meeting.
Arab representatives are supposed to meet with Turkish and US foreign ministers Hakan Fidan and Anthony Blinken in the city of Aqaba.
The representative of the EU for foreign affairs, Kaja Kallas, as well as the UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, are also participating.
"Tactical operation"
Israel stated in a letter to the United Nations Security Council, which met on Monday, that its attacks "limited in scope and temporary". He added that he took them out to protect his population in the Golan Heights, which is right next to Syria.
"Israel has not intervened in the conflict in Syria. Our activities are focused on our security," said Israel's ambassador to the UN, Dani Danon.
Israel claims that it has no interest in meddling in Syria's internal affairs and that it focuses only on the defense of its citizens.
Defense Minister Israel Katz said that after the completion of the takeover, Israel will create a buffer zone "security zone' outside it by destroying heavy artillery across Syria and preventing Iran from smuggling weapons through Syria into Lebanon.
Israel is not currently trying to change the border or prepare to invade Syria, said Kermit Valensi, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, a think tank in Tel Aviv.
"It is currently a tactical operation, not a long-term strategy, in response to the dynamic situation in Syria," she added.
