After only ten days of how it is a resident of Velenje (Slovenia) cut off his head sa monument to Tito, the municipality restored that bronze monument.
It is made in natural size, and its author is Antun Augustinčić.
The perpetrator was immediately identified, the municipality of Velenje filed a criminal complaint against him, and intends to file a claim for compensation.
Protect all monuments
At the same time, the municipal administration is drafting a regulation that will additionally protect all monuments in the city, regardless of who they are dedicated to.
On the occasion of the desecration of the monument, the local committee of the Movement for Freedom requested an extraordinary session. However, Mayor Peter Dermol rejected their request, saying it would only deepen divisions and reopen ideological debates about the past.
Dermol believes that the municipal council should focus its energy on decisions of importance for the present and future of Velenje, and the discussion about Tito should be ended as soon as possible.
He also refused to publicly apologize to the local man who cut off the head from Tito's monument because he said he was an "unbalanced person with an unbalanced background". The perpetrator claims that it is defamation under the Criminal Code.
"I have no intention of apologizing to anyone, especially not those who encroach on the common heritage of citizens," said Dermol and emphasized that "heritage must be protected, because allowing such actions can lead to the desecration of other important structures. As mayor, I will always strongly condemn any such intervention."
Eight years in prison
A local man (49) hid the severed head of Tito's monument in the trunk of a car with two Croatian license plates.
He was found based on a tip from a citizen who noticed that a man was loading a large metal object into a vehicle.
The perpetrator is threatened with a sentence of up to 8 years in prison.
He admitted his guilt, and wrote on social networks that he desecrated Tito's monument because he does not agree with "celebrating persons who cause fear and pain in people."
The monument was unveiled on June 25, 1977, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Tito's accession to the head of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, the founding congress of the Communist Party of Slovenia, and the location for the statue was chosen by the author himself.
