The United Nations plans to double food and medicine deliveries over the next two months to about two million Gazans who are facing hunger and shortages of basic necessities.

coordinator of the United Nations for emergency aid Tom Fletcher said that about 170.000 tons of food, medicine and other supplies are ready for immediate transport to gazu.

In the first 60 days of the truce, the goal is to send hundreds of truckloads of supplies to the enclave a day, Fletcher said at a press conference, according to CNN.

He pointed out that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic, famine has been declared due to Israeli restrictions on aid, infrastructure has been destroyed during two years of Israeli military operations, and a large part of the population has been displaced several times.

U.N. officials hope the truce will allow a continued increase in aid to reach the people, but told CNN that details of when, where and what types of aid will be allowed remain unclear.

Fletcher said the UN plans to increase food aid over the next two months, "so that food can reach two million people who are starving."

In addition, it is planned to restore the "decimated health system", water supply and sanitation services, as well as the opening of "temporary classrooms to provide at least some activities for 700.000 school-aged children".

To achieve a dramatic increase in aid and services, Fletcher said several conditions needed to be met, including the continued entry of nearly two million liters of fuel per week, the provision of gas for kitchens, the protection of aid workers, easier access to non-governmental organizations, adequate funding and the opening of new border crossings.
