Two assassinations
Ahead of Trump's arrival, large numbers of people waited to enter the venue, many chanting the slogan "Fight, Fight, Fight" that Trump shouted moments after he was shot on July 13.
The July assassination attempt on Trump in Butler, when a bullet grazed his right ear, highlighted serious lapses in his security and resulted in increased security measures at his subsequent campaign rallies.
Critics expressed concern that 20-year-old assassination attempt suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was later killed by Secret Service agents, was able to gain access to a nearby rooftop with a direct view of where Trump was speaking.
It was the first of two assassination attempts on Trump. The gunman was hiding on Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida on September 15, with plans to kill him, prosecutors said. His plans were thwarted by a US Secret Service agent patrolling the grounds.
Security measures were visibly increased at the rally in Butler, and armed police officers in camouflage uniforms were deployed on the surrounding rooftops.
In the elections four years ago, Trump lost in Pennsylvania, one of the key states for the presidential elections in the USA.
