US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) confirmed the death of 21-year-old Mike Gloss, the son of CIA Deputy Director for Digital Innovation, Julianne Galina Gloss, NBC News reported.
Glos, as reported by index.hr, joined the Russian army and died during the fighting in Ukraine.
CIA: Private family matter
"The CIA considers Michael's death a private family matter for the Gloss family and not a matter of national security," a CIA spokesman said.
The Important Stories portal first reported the news of Gloss's death, citing Russian sources and the deceased's social networks. On his VKontakte page, Gloss posted photos from Red Square and expressed sympathy for the Russian military, calling the Ukrainian military "corrupt" and the Western media "propaganda."
The CIA officially confirmed the death, but did not specify on whose side the son of their official participated in the fighting. The statement stated that the family experienced a great tragedy and that their privacy is requested to be respected.
"Journey to Eastern Europe"
In the official obituary, the family stated that Michael died "while traveling in Eastern Europe", without mentioning Russia or the war in Ukraine.
According to available information, Michael Gloss is the son of Julian Galina Gloss, the CIA's deputy director for digital innovation, and Larry Gloss, an Iraq war veteran who works on software development for the US military and NATO.
The media say that Michael was a pacifist, a participant in the protest against the ban on abortion, and he advocated for the protection of the environment. Before coming to Russia in 2023, he traveled around Europe, and on social networks he presented himself as an anti-fascist, an environmental activist and a fighter for women's rights. He published conspiracy theories about Ukraine and believed that NATO was founded by the Nazis.
