President of the USA Donald tramp announced that on the first day of his new mandate in the White House stop the war in Ukraine. Four months have passed since then. Now, for the third time since January, he spoke by phone with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, but peace in Ukraine doesn't seem any closer.
Trump informed the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the President of France Emmanuel Macron and the Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz about the outcome of the two-hour chat. He also invited the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
He summarized the outcome on his social network Trtuth Social: the conversation with Pution went "very well", and now it's up to the warring parties to negotiate everything they need to. For example, a comprehensive truce or conditions for an end to the war.
The German "Spiegel" assesses that for the first time Trump is taking a position that suits Putin, who always offers negotiations, but does not stop his attacks on Ukraine. There is obviously nothing from some kind of pressure on Putin, which Trump recently announced.
Putin: A substantive and open conversation
Unusually fast for him, Putin addressed the public immediately after the conversation with Trump from Sochi. He thanked the American president for the "substantial and open" exchange of views.
And then he basically said that he was ready to continue the talks about the talks, that is. that he will present to the Ukrainians a Russian memorandum on a possible peace treaty with all the details of its implementation, without specifying what it will contain.
Von der Leyen: It's important for the US to stay in the game
As far as the Europeans are concerned, the immediate cessation of hostilities they are seeking is not on the table. On the contrary, even after the talks between the American and Russian presidents, it seems that Putin will continue with the tactic of dragging out the negotiations indefinitely, while continuing with combat operations.
He has no reason to be in a hurry: Trump has repeatedly emphasized that the war in Ukraine is a European problem, that America will no longer throw around huge amounts of money for war aid to Kiev, and that he will do what he can to reach some sort of peace agreement, but that he will not mess around with it for long and if they do not listen to him, he will leave the Russians, Ukrainians and Europeans to fend for themselves as they know how.
With the withdrawal of the US as an active participant in the conflict with Russia, the defense power of Ukraine would be significantly weakened.
Von der Leyen stated that it is very important that the United States remains engaged on the issue of the war in Ukraine. Just how much longer?
On Monday night, Trump said that he expects a quick breakthrough in the negotiations, and if it doesn't happen, "the US will simply withdraw" from everything.
