Parliamentary elections in Romania were held on December 1 and were won by the coalition of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (NLP), the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) and representatives of national minorities, Ađerpres reports, stating that it was held the first meeting of the leaders of the coalition parties in 2025.
"At this year's first meeting of the coalition, the political parties agreed that the first round of presidential elections will be held on May 4, and the second on May 18," the coalition's announcement states.
Presidential elections were held in Romania on November 24, in which the independent candidate Kalin Djordescu won in the first round with 22,94 percent of the votes. However, on December 6, the Constitutional Court annulled the results of those elections, citing serious irregularities confirmed by declassified documents of the Supreme Security Council.
In the explanation, it is stated that Đorđescu violated the election law by declaring zero campaign expenses until intelligence data revealed that he was financed with one million euros by businessman Bogdan Peškir. In addition, the intelligence services announced that "a foreign country carried out cyber attacks on the information and communication infrastructure in connection with the election process, as well as that Romania was the target of Russia's hybrid actions."
The Constitutional Court ordered that the entire election process begin next year. According to Ađerpres, in addition, the current president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, published reports from the Ministry of the Interior and Intelligence Services, from which it follows that hundreds of bloggers allegedly received money to promote Djordescu. It is stated that TikTok was used to promote Djordescu, where more than 25 thousand accounts were created, and the investigation of the intelligence services established that the activities of these accounts were controlled through the Telegram channel.
