In some American states have begun early voting on presidential elections, which are scheduled for November 5.
Voters lined up in Minnesota, South Dakota and Virginia, where polls are open. More than 10 states will begin early voting in the coming weeks, the Associated Press reported.
The start of early voting followed a tumultuous summer - the exit of President Joe Biden from the race, the entry of Vice President Kamala Harris and two failed assassination attempts on Donald Trump.
All over the country, election boards are trying to strengthen the security of the voting process and to ensure that their members and polling stations are well secured, so that the whole process goes without fraud. Election committee members were targeted after the 2020 elections and received death threats.
As Voice of America reports, federal authorities are investigating suspicious packages sent to election board members over the past 15 days, including those in Virginia, where voting began today.
Some voters went to the polls early because of the potential chaos on Election Day, and many voters are opting to go to the polls instead of voting by mail to make sure their vote counts, due to issues with the US Postal Service.
Local and state officials have warned that mail delivery problems threaten to disenfranchise citizens and that the deficiencies have not been corrected, regardless of their attempts to fix them.
The director of the Post Office, Louis Dejoy, said that he would work to solve the problem and reiterated that the Post Office would be ready.
Some states count mail-in votes even if they arrive after Election Day, provided they are mailed no later than Election Day, while Minnesota counts only those mail-in votes that arrive by the close of the polls on Election Day.
